Uh-Oh Noises

Project Description

This is a TLDR but its a good story so here goes. I was driving to do an on-site service when I noticed the company truck was growling more than usual. Once I got between a couple of buildings in downtown Kalamazoo. I noticed grinding and clicking noises were bouncing off of the buildings. I had a good idea of what was wrong. I turned around and came back to my garage to investigate.

Once the front of truck was jacked up off the ground. I checked both wheels to see if they moved anyway but round and the passenger side would tilt out about an inch. Yikes! the wheel barrings are shot. Once I got the diagnosis I removed the wheel, brakes, brake disk, and the big bolt holding the wheel barring assymbly in place.

I placed my hand on the upper A arm to take a closer look and it was too hot to touch. The heat from the bad barring had transfered through the assymbly and into the surrounding metal. Thats when I knew then I was in for a battle.

With my pully puller I attempted to get the assymbly off of the truck. I tried that for an hour with out success. Even with the cheater bar the pully puller would not take off the wheel barring assymbly in desparation I went to the garage and got my Sledge hammer. I started tapping it lightly with no effect. Using different angles and areas I hit it harder and harder until I was beating it as hard as I could considering the space. After an hour of that it didnt even budge. I was spent. I set down my tools and prayed. I needed to get the job I had scheduled.

The thought came to mind heat and cold expand and contract solids respectively. The matterial was scalding hot already so I couldn't heat it. I need to make the wheel barring assymbly cold so it pulled away from the seat. I was at a loss of how to do that. But I was reminded of a time shortly after highshcool when I was working at a computer repair shop and our friends would spray each other with "canned air" upside down and it would freeze your cloths stiff and if you got it on your skin it would mean instant frostbite.

I hopped in my wifes car and ran to walmart and picked up four pack of electronics duster and came right back unpacking my new tools I grabbed 2 cans and turned them upside down and emptied the both cans right on the hub. Rising out of the cloud of steam rolling off of my target I grabbed the hammer and prepaired to hit the hub still collecting a coat of ice, growing because of condensation.

I gave it one good hit and it fell to the ground with with satisfying "ching, ching, ching". With the battle won. I set to getting the truck back on the road. It all went together as expected and I was back on the road to the site I was do at 4 hour prior. When I arrived the client was understanding and I stayed until the requested work was complete roughly midnight. In spite of the challenges we got the job done in a timely manner. pretty fun day.
